The training covers all of the 8 Standards and Competencies including history and legal guidelines of SAP, effective skills for core team involvement & group development, the four phase process of SAP, the importance of caregiver involvement, legal rights of parents and students, substance abuse and mental health issues within the school setting, building and supporting resiliency in a student, and cultural awareness and competency training. Practice through role playing parent calls, identifying observable behaviors and interviewing students culminates in the afternoon of day three with all registrants participating on a mock SAP team with roles, and a “case” from referral through to follow up. Act 48 credits are available upon successful completion of the training and post training competencies. Successful completion of post training competencies results in SAP certification, giving the school board, parents, fellow school personnel and the community the assurance that participants have been trained in the most current information and guidelines as monitored by the Interagency Committee. Following a brief overview of neurobiology and the mind-body connection, she will explain why the developing brain is more vulnerable to the effects of trauma and violence. The latest science on adolescent brain development will be introduced to demonstrate the continuum of brain development and windows of opportunity. Dr. Chamberlain uses case scenarios to illustrate the physical, mental, cognitive, and behavioral health effects of childhood exposure to violence including the hidden epidemic of posttraumatic stress disorder.
