N-O-T (Not on Tobacco)

N-O-T® is a voluntary, non-punitive program to help teens stop smoking. Developed by the American Lung Association, this program incorporates life management skills to help teens deal with stress, decision-making and peer and family relationships. It also addressed healthy lifestyle behaviors. 

Problem Areas Addressed:

  • teen smoking
  • other health-damaging behaviors

  • smoking cessation
  • reduce number of cigarettes smoked
  • stress management
  • improved decision-making
  • increase healthy lifestyle choices

Age/Grade Level: 13-18 year-olds

Setting: Group sessions; evenings, after school or during the school day

Format: Series of ten 1-hour group sessions; booster sessions also available; participants separated by gender

Effectiveness: Meets the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Guidelines for School Healthy Program to Prevent Tobaco Use and Addiction. Documented evidence of:

  • increased quit rate among teens
  • reduction in the number of cigarettes smoked during weekdays (65.4%)
  • reduction in the number of cigarettes smoked on weekends (75%)
