Overview
America's Promise is a national initiative, featuring Secretary of
State, General Colin Powell, as its spokesman. The
goal of America's Promise is "to mobilize people from every sector
of American life to build the character and competence of our nation's
youth by fulfilling five promises." The five promises are:
- Caring Adults: Ongoing relationships with caring
adults - parents, mentors, tutors, or coaches.
- Safe Places: Safe places with structured activities
during non-school hours.
- Healthy Start: Healthy start and future.
- Marketable Skills: Marketable skills through
effective education.
- Opportunities To Serve: Opportunities to give
back through community service.
