Alternative Community Intervention

ACI is a community-based, early intervention program designed to reduce risk factors and build resiliency skills among youth and families. Success in this program is achieved through mentoring, community involvement, support, tutoring and talent/skill development.

  • familial antisocial behaviors

  • poor academic performance

Age/Grade Level: Youth ages 10-18

Setting: After school, summer residential camp and summer day camp

Format: 7-day residential camp; 4-day/week after-school sessions; 5-week summer day camp.  * See descriptions of program components below.

  • increased parental supervision and discipline
  • increased levels of academic performance
  • increased levels of commitment to school
  • decreased levels of school-based anti-social behaviors


Future Generations (a component of ACI)

The Future Generations program is an after-school program that provides a safe outlet for each young person’s energy and creativity. The program includes recreational, educational and service-learning activities. Academic tutoring is a key component of the program.

  • poor academic performance
  • lack of engagement in school
  • lack of after-school activities

  • decision making
  • building healthy peer relationships
  • goal setting
  • academic success

Age/Grade Level: Ages 10-14

Setting: After-school

Format: A series of after-school sessions, four days per week, during the school year

Effectiveness: Documented evidence of:

  • increased parental supervision and discipline
  • increased levels of academic performance
  • increased levels of commitment to school
  • decreased levels of school-based anti-social behaviors


Kids Kamp (a component of ACI)

Kids Kamp is a 7-day overnight camping experience involving fun activities that address social competency, skill building, and communication styles. Team building and individual support are fostered through games and recreational activities.

  • aggressive behaviors
  • lack of self-efficacy

  • nature appreciation

Age/Grade Level:  Ages 10-18

Setting: Summer camp

Format: Eight days, seven nights


Connections (a component of ACI)

Connections is a summer program based on experiential education that targets resiliency and protective factors for at-risk youth. The key to this program is the ‘connection’ the youth make with their communities.

Problem Areas Addressed:

  • lack of knowledge of the community
  • difficulty making a connection between themselves and their communities

Skills Built:

  • social competency
  • communication
  • resiliency
  • future goal setting

Age/Grade Level: Ages 10-15

Setting: Community locations throughout Lancaster City and County

Format: Series of four-hour days, two days per week, 5-10 weeks during the summer
